Alfie’s Path from Immobile to Independent
It’s hard to believe Alfie was immobile. Yet, now he can confidently walk. Being born with ATRX Syndrome, a rare genetic condition that can affect a child’s learning, speech, and muscle tone meant Alfie’s development did not progress at the same rate as his peers.
Alfie’s mother, caring for her two precious children with genetic conditions, devoted her days to meeting their needs while carrying the quiet ache of watching her son Alfie unable to move.
Now mobile, Alfie only sits when he needs rest from walking
With guidance from Doman Method® therapy program, Alfie began taking his first steps. What started as cautious movements soon transformed into confident strides. Today, he walks for transportation; over 2 km per day, building strength with every step. Another great achievement is that he is reading above his age level. With such remarkable progress the family was expectant about the next milestones he could make as he received guidance on the program.
With the financial cost of the program, however, sometimes the goals can feel out of reach. Katie recalls the moment their journey shifted:
“When we received the YaraStar scholarship, it felt like a door opening. For the first time, I felt we had not only real tools but community support to help Alfie move forward.”

The journey doesn’t stop here. Alfie is now getting ready to start a respiratory program to strengthen his speech, with the hope that his voice will become as strong as his stride. Katie continues to guide both her children through the program with resilience and love.
Alfie’s transformation is a reminder that every child holds limitless potential when given the chance to thrive. From immobility to independence, his journey shows how possibility becomes reality through care, perseverance, and the rallying community support.
As Alfie prepares for his next steps—to run and to find his voice through speech—we celebrate his progress and stand with his family for the road ahead. Every child is a gift, and stories like Alfie’s remind us why we honor that truth each day.
